1970 FIFA World Cup winning Brazilian Selecao captain Carlos Alberto Torres died yesterday at the age of 72 due to a heart attack.
The Rio de Janeiro born Carlos Alberto Torres, also fondly known as “O Capitão do Tri”, played for Fluminense (twice), FC Santos, Flamengo, New York Cosmos (twice) and California Surf in an illustrious club career in Brazil and the United States, playing alongside other football legends like Pele at Santos and NY Cosmos or Franz Beckenbauer at the Cosmos.
Carlos Alberto played 53 times for Brazil scoring eight goals with the most important one coming in the final of the 1970 FIFA World Cup final in a 4-1 win over Italy, where he also lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy after the match.
I had the pleasure of meeting Carlos Alberto in Kolkata in December 2013 at the FIFA World Cup trophy tour. I actually had the chance to sit down with him and talk football, a simple man, who loved the beautiful game and he was loved by all.
I am deeply saddened by the death of my friend and brother @capita70. Dear God, please take care of our "Capitão". Rest In Peace. 🇧🇷🙏🏽 pic.twitter.com/QucowrHHr6
