The 2018 FIFA World Cup continued on Wednesday, June 27 afternoon with Mexico suffering a heavy 0-3 upset by Sweden at the Ekaterinburg Arena, but both sides qualified for the knockout stages.
Sweden knew that they needed a win to stay in the tournament after their last second loss to Germany and they played that way against a Mexico which was nowhere near their performances against Germany and South Korea.
After a goalless first half, Sweden took the lead in the 50th minute through Ludwig Augustinsson. Matters got worse for Mexico when referee Nestor Pitana gave Sweden a penalty after Moreno brought down Berg and their captain Andreas Granqvist banged in his second spot kick of the tournament in the 62nd minute.
Things got even worse for Mexico when their own defender Edson Alvarez scored in the 74th minute into their own and in the end Sweden won the match 3-0 to top the group, while Mexico also qualified as the second placed team with South Korea upsetting defending champions Germany.
