The 2018 FIFA World Cup continued on Tuesday, June 19 afternoon with 10 men Colombia suffering a surprise 1-2 defeat to Japan at the Mordovia Arena in Saransk.
Colombia had the worst possible start as midfielder Carlos Sanchez was send off in the 3rd minute for a handball inside the box, the second fastest in FIFA World Cup history. Japan star Shinji Kagawa scored the resultant penalty and gave his side an early lead.
10 men Colombia tried to get back in an open game and they got their goal off a controversial free-kick in the 37th minute as Juan Quintero equalised. It was 1-1 at the break.
In the second session, Japan were the better of the two sides but they were wasteful with their chances until the 73rd minute as a corner from Keisuke Honda was headed in by Yuya Osako for the 2-1 lead and in the end historic winner.
