2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia worldwide TV audiences start strong!

With audience figures coming in from around the world after the opening weekend’s action in Russia, the latest edition of world football’s ultimate competition is proving as popular as ever with viewers everywhere.

Match Day 1: Russia v. Saudi Arabia

The Opening Match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup between the hosts and Saudi Arabia was the highest rated TV programme of 2018 in Russia, where Channel One’s live coverage was watched by 18.05 million viewers – a share of 48.3% (almost four times the channel’s typical share of 12.7%). Match Day 2: Egypt v. Uruguay, Morocco v. IR Iran, Portugal v. Spain

Portugal v. Spain aired live during Friday evening prime time on Telecinco. The audience of 9.27 million viewers was Spain’s highest television audience of any programme genre so far in 2018 and represented a share of 66.7%. Source: Kantar Media ESP

13.17 million viewers watched ARD’s live coverage of the Portugal v. Spain match – 46.4% of German television viewers at that time and the highest sports audience of 2018 in Germany. Source: ARD

Match Day 3: France v. Australia, Argentina v. Iceland, Peru v. Denmark, Croatia v. Nigeria

In France, Les Bleus’ opening match against Australia aired live on TF1 and was watched by an average audience of 12.60 million viewers (a share of 69%), making it the most watched broadcast of any kind this year and also larger than any audience from 2017. 149,000 viewers watched Iceland’s first ever FIFA World Cup match on RUV. The Group D clash between Argentina and Iceland was watched by an astonishing 60.0% of all Icelandic television viewers (TVR), with a staggering 99.6% of all television viewers at that time tuning in to the match (share). The highest audience in Iceland from FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014™ was 114,000 for the final between Germany and Argentina. Source: EBU
An average audience of 44.74 million viewers tuned in to CCTV5’s live coverage of Argentina v. Iceland, which aired at 21:00 local time and peaked with 52.10 million viewers. This was by far the highest audience of the tournament so far in China. Source: CCTV
Croatia’s opening match win against Nigeria attracted 1.27 million viewers on HTV2, the highest audience on Croatian television so far in 2018. 72.42% of all Croatian viewers at the time watched the coverage, which also represented 30.92% of the total potential audience (TVR). Source: EBU
