2018 FIFA World Cup – QF: Belgium overcome record champions Brazil!

The 2018 FIFA World Cup continued on Friday, July 6 evening with record champions Brazil eliminated after a 1-2 loss to Belgium at the Kazan Arena.

Both teams started the match with an attacking intent with de Buryne giving the first warning shot for Belgium, while Thiago Silva’s attempt post a corner only hit the post.

But then Belgium went ahead through a Nacer Chadli corner in the 13th minute which Kompany touched and his Manchester City club team mate Fernandinho deflected into his own goal.

Brazil was shocked by going behind while Belgium continued to come out of a compact defensive unit with counter attacking intent. One such situation in the 31st minute got them their second goal. A Brazil corner, Belgium on the counter, Lukaku is able to keep off multiple challenges and passes to de Bruyne, who fires one into the long corner.

Brazil now looked desperate to reduce the deficit but Courtois kept his cleansheet at the end of the first half as Belgium took a surprising 2-0 lead into the break.

In the second session, Brazil were in-charge against a ultra-defensive Belgium but their finishing let them down and even if they had a great attempt, then keeper Thibaut Courtois was there to save the day.

The pressure finally resulted in a goal in the 76th minute as Countinho beautifully chipped the ball into the box for substitute Renato Augusto to head in, but despite all their efforts and attempts, Brazil could not score a second and Belgium scored a memorable 2-1 win to qualify for the semifinals.
