2018 FIFA World Cup – QF: England impress in 2-0 win over Sweden!

The 2018 FIFA World Cup continued on Saturday, July 7 afternoon with former champions England beating Sweden 2-0 to move into the semifinals at the Samara Arena.

England had more of the ball from the start, but Sweden made their live difficult. England’s strength in this tournament have been their standards, especially corners and it was another one of those on the half hour mark that gave them the lead. A corner taken by Ashley Young was headed in with power by Harry Maguire to give the Three Lions the lead.

England had their best phase in the game just before the break, but Raheem Sterling was send twice free, on the first occasion offside and on the second occasion keeper Olsen got a hand to the ball and then Granqvist blocked for a corner. England went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Sweden was quicker off the blocks in the second session. Only the 47th minute a good cross from the left, MArkus Berg with a header but Jordan Pickford just about clears the ball with his hand. But the goal would come at the other end, the 59th minute minute, a cross from Lingard and Deli Alli heads into the Swedish goal, 2-0 England.

Sweden were not shocked but limited with their attempts. In the 62nd minute, Claesson twice had the chance to score and then in the 71st minute, Pickford just about got his hand to the ball to push it over the crossbar off another good attempt by Berg.

That was it as Sweden tried but had no more attempts on goal as England deservingly won 2-0 and move into their third FIFA World Cup semifinal in the history of the competition.
