7th AFC Grassroots Panel Meeting concludes!

The AFC Grassroots Charter continued its steady growth as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Grassroots Panel concluded its seventh meeting in the Malaysian capital on Friday, April 19.

AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh elaborated on the meaning of grassroots football as well as the goal of the Grassroots Charter, saying, “Grassroots Football is the foundation of football and its primary purpose is to increase the level of interest and participation among the players, coaches, volunteers and organisers.”

“The AFC Grassroots Charter is a dynamic tool to help MAs develop their grassroots programmes. The charter is also an endorsement programme which recognises and supports the MAs in their efforts to further develop their grassroots programmes in line with the criteria set by AFC.”

The panel members discussed the challenges and ways to further streamline the assessment process, as well as the strategy for the further development of the project.

AFC Grassroots manager Masahiro Sugiyama shared the latest news with the panel on the AFC President Recognition Award for Grassroots Football 2018 as well as the upcoming AFC Grassroots Football Day 2019, which will take place May 15, 2019.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) Head of Grassroots Anju Turambekar, who is also a panel member, shared her journey on grassroots development.

“It has been a beautiful and challenging journey. I’m very grateful for being granted this opportunity and I believe there is a lot to be done in my country and in Asia,” said Turambekar who became the youngest AFC ‘A’ licensed women’s coach in 2018.

“I’m a keen student of the game and this will be a big challenge for me to implement new things at home as well as throughout Asia.”

“The panel members have some unbelievable experiences in developing football. I would like to learn from everyone as well as share my thoughts on the future of grassroots programmes.”
