Argentina and their head coach Jorge Sampaoli after a dismal 2018 FIFA World Cup which ended in a pre-quarterfinal exit against France have agreed to mutually terminate his contract.
The Argentina Football Association in a release said, “Today, the Argentine Football Association and the former national team coach, Jorge Sampaoli, have mutually agreed to the termination of their contract.”
58 year old Jorge Sampaoli is regarded as a highly talented coach, who had success with the Chile national team and FC Sevilla, while also having success with Argentina whom he took charge off in May 2017 and after a difficult qualification campaign, Argentina qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia due to a star performance from Lionel Messi.
But in Russia, Argentina were back to their old ways after a 1-1 draw against Iceland came a 0-3 defeat to Croatia before a controversial 2-1 win over Nigeria took Argentina into the knockout stages of the tournament, but there a 3-4 defeat to eventual champions France led to the early departure of Argentina from Russia.
And then the speculation started if Sampaoli would be given a further chance with the Albiceleste or if he would be asked to leave as his squad selection was questioned and if Sampaoli was still in-charge of the team. In the end he had to leave and someone else would take charge of the team in the future.
