Asia’s top match officials get insights ahead of 2019 season!

The AFC Elite Referees & Assistant Referees Seminars 2018 for Group 1 and 3 simultaneously opened in the Malaysian capital and in Dubai, United Arab Emirates yesterday, November 20.

Conducted annually, the aim of the Seminars is to review the 2018 AFC Competitions season and prepare the AFC’s top match officials for the upcoming one.

The referees are updated on the latest amendments to the Laws of the Game and undergo the review of relevant match incidents to reach consistency and uniformity in decision-making and to elevate their officiating standards.

Building upon the success of past editions, the seminar combines male and female participants, with a total of 298 in attendance for the five-day event.

“Under the AFC’s Vision and Mission, our referees are a key priority in developing world class teams. The past 12 months have confirmed that Asian refereeing is now stronger than ever,” said AFC General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John in his opening remarks.

“We had a record 16 match officials at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and Alireza Faghani equaled Asia’s best-ever performance when he officiated in the third and fourth playoff between England and Belgium.”

“Less than a week ago, we celebrated the first anniversary of the AFC Referee Academy – which sees the AFC establish itself as world leaders’ in refereeing development.”

“The world of refereeing has seen several changes, particularly with the introduction of the AAR and VAR systems in recent years.”

“Just last week, the AFC Referees Committee approved the use of the VAR system from the quarterfinals of our most prestigious tournament – the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019.”

“This course, which has now found a permanent home in our annual events calendar, is another clear sign of our commitment to you. Delivered by our continent’s finest technical and fitness instructors, it addresses all the key areas and latest updates to prepare you for the world’s biggest stages.”

AFC Referees Committee member Ali AlTraifi opened the seminar in Dubai. Group 2 and 4 will meet on November 26-30.
