Aspiring elite referees ready to make their mark in Asia!

43 football and 18 futsal referees are set to take the first step in their journey to become elite referees as they gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Tuesday, October 16 for the 2018 AFC Referees Recruitment courses happening concurrently.

The three-day course, which is a prelude to the AFC elite panel, aims to evaluate referees on their technical knowledge and physical condition to officiate high-level matches, with classroom lectures to update the referees on the latest Laws of the Game amendments and report writing skills.

The participants’ fitness level will be tested as well as their knowledge on refereeing through a practical evaluation followed by an analysis of actual match situations and video tests.

In line with the AFC Vision and Mission of raising the standard of Asian referees to be the benchmark in the world of refereeing, the AFC Referees Committee approved in November 2017 an optimisation of the phases leading to the AFC elite panel by replacing the AFC Referees Selection course with an increased number of top league matches assessed from two to three.

The main objective is to increase the opportunities of evaluating the referees’ performance on actual match demands rather than on simulated situations.

Based on the newly introduced criteria, successful participants are expected to complete their three match assessments at the top national level by July 31 next year. Candidates ranked within the required marks at the said matches will be invited to the AFC Elite Referees Seminar in 2019.
