Bayern Munich first winner of European Reusable Awards!

FC Bayern München has received the Resuable Award from the European REUSE Conference for its switch to reusable drinks containers for home matches at the Allianz Arena. The award ceremony took place last Thursday at the end of the REUSE Conference in Brussels, organised by Environmental Action Germany (DUH), the European Federation of Associations of Beer and Beverages Wholesalers (CEGROBB), the German Association of Private Breweries and the Reloop platform. It is the first time the prize has been awarded. The aim is to reward sustainable solutions that protect the climate and strengthen the principle of reusable packaging as a social standard.

Barbara Metz, deputy federal manager of the DUH, praised FC Bayern München as a club that “not only sets standards in Europe on the pitch, but also when it comes to the issue of waste prevention”. She added that the introduction of the reusable drinks container system was an example of “how you can combine environmental protection and fun at the stadium. (…) Plastic waste has become one of the biggest environmental problems – so big that the European Union has now agreed on a ban on single-use plastics.“

“The Allianz Arena has a special position in national and international football as an environmentally friendly, ultra-modern sports stadium,” commented Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of FC Bayern. “Since as far back as 2006, our sustainably run stadium has been audited annually in accordance with the strictest guidelines in Europe – the EMAS scheme. We are currently putting together a new set of sustainability targets and projects in order to further strengthen our ecological and social responsibility. I am delighted that FC Bayern München’s commitment to the environment has been recognised with an award in Brussels.“

FC Bayern has been a member of the Bavarian Climate-Alliance since 2015. The switch to reusable drinks containers was also organised with the help of the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment. Jürgen Muth, managing director of Allianz Arena München Stadion GmbH, accepted the Reusable Award on behalf of FC Bayern. In his acceptance speech, Muth also highlighted the development of LED technology, which has already enabled enormous savings potential in the area of lighting. “This year we will commission a large photovoltaic system on the roof of a newly constructed multi-storey car park, and next year we intend to further increase the proportion of our energy that we generate ourselves. We are talking about an Allianz Arena that will only be operated with clean electricity, and we are working on electromobility.”

“I can tell you that the switch from disposable to reusable cups was very well received by the more than 1.5 million spectators who attended our home games last season,” Jürgen Muth summed up before the conference participants in Brussels. “In an ever-expanding network – which also includes FC Bayern partners such as Siemens, Zumtobel, Audi and SAP – we discuss all current environmental issues and seek answers to the questions we are faced with today. The Reusable Award motivates us to continue working towards sustainability goals.”
