Can the 2019/20 I-League be finished despite the Coronavirus pandemic?

Mohun Bagan have sealed the 2019/20 I-League title, but there are still 18 matches to play to decide who finishes second to get an AFC Cup spot and who gets relegated.

Currently Mohun Bagan’s archrivals East Bengal Club are in second spot, while former champions Aizawl FC are in 10th spot, which would mean relegation for them.

But as is the case with many football leagues around the world, the I-League is currently suspended due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

And only one thing is sure, the 2019/20 I-League will not finish on April 5 as originally planned plus if and when the remaining matches would be played is unknown.

The rapid spread of the Coronavirus has led to widespread disruptions in sports around the world and with India under lockdown (curfew) until at least April 14, the I-League will have to wait.

But with the unplanned delay, many clubs could face problems as they have contracts with some of their players and coaches until April 30, 2020, while others run until the end of the 2019/20 season on May 31.

And April 30 as the last date of the 2019/20 I-League looks currently unlikely to impossible with the Coronavirus set to spread in India, while even May 31 looks difficult to keep and if the 2019/20 season is expanded any further is currently known.

The AIFF and their Leagues department have a difficult decision to make, then at some stage, the latest once the pandemic is over, what to do with the 2019/20 I-League and the remaining matches.
