Centre of Sports Science joins AFC’s Medical Centre of Excellence!

The Centre for Sports Science (CSS) under the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education & Research received its accreditation as an AFC Medical Centre of Excellence at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, November 7.

The Chennai-based facility which strives to be a dedicated world-class centre for sports science, medical services and education in India, has met all the criteria including the AFC guidelines, and is the first facility in the country to receive the AFC’s recognition.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa presented the award to CSS Director Dr. S. Arumugam at the accreditation ceremony, which was also attended by AFC General Secretary Dato’ Windsor John.

Dr. Arumugam expressed his gratitude and also said, “Football is a growing sport in India, and this recognition gives us the opportunities to collaborate with leaders in the football industry, and most importantly, attain best practices and guidelines that would benefit the athletes.”

Apart from serving as an officially AFC accredited referral centre for football players as well as a local liaison with the AFC, CSS will have the opportunity to conduct independent and collaborative research studies with the AFC Medical Committee and other centres, becoming a team player in the global research strategy in football medicine.

“We are really honoured to be part of this elite network. Our centre is part of the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, and we are heavily focused on research. We strongly feel that we can bring our experience in research, and coupled with AFC’s expertise in football, there’s so much that can be done.”
