Chennaiyin FC appoints Tony Warner as goalkeeping coach!

Indian Super League franchise Chennaiyin FC has announced the signing of 43-year-old Tony Warner as their goalkeeping coach for the 2017/18 campaign of the Indian Super League – Season 4.

Warner joins head coach John Gregory’s coaching staff which already includes assistant coaches Mark Lillis and Syed Sabir Pasha and sports scientist Niall Clark.

The former goalkeeper had a playing career spanning more than two decades with the majority of it having spent in English football. He has had spells at Liverpool FC, Hull City and Fulham FC and played over 200 league games for FC Millwall, having also reached the FA Cup final with them in 2004. He also represented Trinidad and Tobago at international level.

Outside England, he also had stints with New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix in Australia’s A-League and Floriana FC in Malta. As a goalkeeping coach he has worked at Bolton Wanderers in the past.

Interestingly, Tony Warner had signed a contract with ISL rivals NorthEast United FC in 2015, but left before joining them for the Bolton Wanderers as goalkeeping coach.

“I am delighted to have joined Chennaiyin’s coaching staff and grateful to the club and John Gregory for giving me this opportunity. I have already enjoyed working with the keepers here and look forward to help them develop and have a great season ahead,” Warner said from Chennaiyin FC’s pre-season training base in Hua Hin, Thailand.
