Chennaiyin FC end Jamshedpur FC’s playoff hopes with goalless draw!

Defending champions Chennaiyin FC held Jamshedpur FC to a goalless draw at the Marina Arena on Saturday evening to end the Steelmen’s chances to qualify for the playoffs.

Jamshedpur FC made two changes in this game with Jerry Mawia and Karan Amin being drafted in to the playing XI. This was the latter’s first start in the ISL. The first-half proved to be a cagey affair with both sides struggling for composure in the final third.

The best chance of the half fell to Mario Arques in the 31st minute when he received a glorious ball from Sergio Cidoncha. The midfielder glanced his effort on goal but was denied by a stunning stop from Karanjeet Singh.

Second half saw both sides opening up with Jamshedpur FC upping the ante in search of an opening goal. In the 57th minute, Jeje Lalpekhlua had a stunning chance to give his side the lead but his shot went straight into the hands of Subrata Paul. Cesar Ferrando called upon the services of Michael Soosairaj, Pablo Morgado and Mobashir Rahman to change the proceedings.

Soosairaj could have delivered the knockout punch to Chennaiyin FC right at the end but as it was the case throughout the night, it just wasn’t Jamshedpur FC’s day. Getting on the end of a blistering move, Soosairaj scored in the 88th minute only to be flagged offside seconds later, breaking the hearts of Jamshedpur FC players, staff and supporters.

With this draw, Jamshedpur FC’s hopes of qualifying for the playoffs come to an end in what was a riveting and a rollercoaster of a season under Cesar Ferrando. The side from Jamshedpur play their final match of the season at home against Bengaluru FC on February 27.
