The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), in cooperation with the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Coaches Across Continents (CAC) and UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, have launched training camps and matches for street children and young Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar under their Social Responsibility Programme.

The ongoing initiatives started on November 30, last year and will end in September 2019 and have also included working with the JAAGO Foundation to provide football training for street children in Dhaka which ran from November 30 to December 3.

Then the initiative for Rohingya refugees started on December 4 and will run in the coastal town of Cox’s Bazar, where there are almost 800,000 refugees, will now run until December 10.

The training programme, run in conjunction with UNHCR and CAC, saw 75 male participants from 25 different sections of the refugee camps demonstrated an active role in helping their communities by aspiring to become football coaches.

The final days of the course will focus on giving the participants skills to coach football to children, how to use football to teach life skills, impart lessons about health and wellness, problem solving, and child protection.

The UNHCR will be assisting and joining CAC to conduct Child Protection Training for the participants.

The Dhaka urban programme had more than 40 participants on the first day, including 21 from districts outside Dhaka, which were recruited by the JAAGO Foundation as a part of its ‘Train the Trainers’ programme.

The participants will be coached so they then can work with the schools, football clubs, and children in their communities and engaged in key life skills such as communication, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork.

The training of JAAGO School and Community trainees for the programme was concluded on December 3 at the Boishakhi Ground of JAAGO Foundation. The trainees were given footballs, certificates and other sporting equipment.

Three officials from the CAC – Brian Suskiewicz, Nora Dooley Ges and Tejas Ramakrishna – were present at the ceremony along with BFF General Secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag.
