Portugal international and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the 2016 Ballon d’Or at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid tonight, the fourth time he has won the coveted trophy.
Cristiano Ronaldo finished ahead of five time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi (Argentina/FC Barcelona) and Antoine Griezmann (France/Atletico Madrid).
CR7 had earlier won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, 2013 and 2014 with Lionel Messi the only other recipient of the award over the last nine years since Messi won it for the first time in 2009, and following it up with further triumphs in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.
Cristiano Ronaldo won in this calendar year the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid against city rivals Atletico de Madrid and then followed it up with the 2016 UEFA European Championship with Portugal over hosts France.
“It’s a really great honour to have won my fourth Ballon d’Or. I’m very happy and proud to be receiving this award and I want to thank everyone who works with me and my Real Madrid and Portugal teammates,” Cristiano Ronaldo said.
