Defender Jerome Boateng voted 2016 German Footballer of the Year!

Nike - Jerome_BoatengGerman international and FC Bayern Munich defender Jérôme Boateng has been voted by the German sports journalists as the 2016 German Footballer of the Year!

“I cannot describe what is going through my mind at the moment. I am naturally proud that I was able to achieve this,” said Jerome Boateng.

27 year old Boateng is the first defender since Jürgen Kohler in 1997 to be voted as Germany’s best footballer in the vote organised by German football magazine Kicker and Boateng got my vote this time too!

Interesting is that in the voting, Boateng received a clear mandate with 163 votes, followed by FC Bayern teammates Thomas Müller (95 votes) and Robert Lewandowski (90 votes) in second and third place.

Jerome Boateng in the last few years has developed into one of the best defenders in world football, if not the best, having grown in stature not only at Bayern Munich but also with the German national team. Last season Boateng won the double in Bundesliga and DFB Pokal titles with FC Bayern, while also being one of the key players for Germany in their Euro 2016 campaign.

Germany’s coach of the year award went to Dirk Schuster, who surprised everyone by being able to keep minnows Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga after having taken the club from the brink of the fourth division to top tier football. Only this summer Schuster shifted clubs by joining FC Augsburg.

Meanwhile VfL Wolfsburg Women’s footballer Andrea Popp was voted the best German female footballer of the year, beating out 1.FFC Frankfurt’s Mandy Islacker and FC Bayern Munich’s Melanie Behringer.
