East Bengal draw Mohun Bagan 2-2 in Kolkata derby, lift CFL title for 8th time in a row!

Defending champions East Bengal Club came back to score a 2-2 draw against archrivals Mohun Bagan AC to end their 2017 Calcutta Football League – Premier Division ‘A’ campaign at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri with a record eight straight CFL title.

The red and gold had to toil hard to get the necessary draw to seal their overall 39th Calcutta Football League trophy, another record for them.

But Mohun Bagan had the better start as Azharuddin Mallick gave the Mariners an early 2nd minute lead with East Bengal equalising two minutes ahead of the half time break through a strike from winger Laldanmawia Ralte. At the break things were even at 1-1.

Soon into the second half in the 49th minute Liberian Ansumana Kromah again gave Mohun Bagan the lead through a penalty after Carlyle Mitchell brought down Kamo Stephane Bayi and they had chances to make it three but it was East Bengal’s Syrian midfield general Mahmoud Al Amna, who gave them their second through another penalty after a Raynier Fernandes foul and the 2-2 draw.

Both teams were reduced to 10 men towards the end of the game. First Mohun Bagan captain Kingshuk Debnath was send off for a second booking in the 84th minute, while only two minutes later East Bengal substitute Surabuddin Mallick also was send off.
