FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy arrives in Canada after two-month global tour!

On Tuesday, April 30, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy arrived in Toronto, Canada, marking the end of a two-month and 24-country tour.

Following its launch in Paris on February 24, when FIFA Legends Kristine Lilly and Laura Georges sent the most coveted prize in women’s football off on its whirlwind journey, the trophy has stopped in each of the 24 countries that qualified for the competition, with each nation celebrating its arrival in their own unique way.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy spent a day at Scotland’s historic Edinburgh Castle; an afternoon on the pitch in Jamaica’s Montego Bay as part of a grassroots festival and took a trip on speedboat across Sydney Harbour in Australia, just some of the stops on its journey.

The global FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy Tour has visited six continents, accompanied by FIFA legends and welcomed by former international footballers, politicians and even a king.

Fans and football players flocked to get a close up look at the trophy, a symbol of excellence in female football, designed by William Sawaya and handcrafted by Milanese specialists Sawaya & Moroni in 1998. It stands at 47cm and weighs 4.6kg and its artistic design captures the athleticism, dynamism and elegance of international women’s football. It is made of bronze gold-plated, polished aluminium and Verde Candeias Granite and engraved underneath its base are the names of each of the previous winners of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, cementing their place in football history.

The tour was designed to engage with existing fans of women’s football and to highlight the eighth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place this summer in France. It also served as a platform to highlight the slogan of the tournament #DareToShine that aims to inspire, encourage and empower girls and women to get involved in football and to be the best that they can be in whatever they do.

Speaking about the upcoming tournament FIFA’s Chief Women’s Football Officer, Sarai Bareman said, “This summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup is going to be the biggest ever, which meant that we wanted to make the Trophy Tour the biggest ever too! Visiting each of the 24 countries competing has given me an incredible insight into the excitement building around the tournament and if the enthusiasm we have seen during the tour is anything to go by, the FIFA Women’s World Cup is going to be one big football party.”

The FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place from June 7 to July 7 and feature 24 teams contesting 52 matches in nine Host Cities: Grenoble, Le Havre, Lyon, Montpellier, Nice, Paris, Reims, Rennes and Valenciennes.
