France’s Ligue 1 champs AS Monaco sign keeper Diego Benaglio from VfL Wolfsburg!

French Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco today announced the signing of Swiss international goalkeeper Diego Benaglio from German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg on a three-year contract.

The experienced and imposing goalkeeper, who stands 6’3″, made an impressive figure as he walked up the steps of the Stade Louis II for the first time. With 61 caps for Switzerland, Diego previously had spells with Grasshopper Zurich and Nacional in Portugal, before going on to earn a reputation as one of the top keepers in the Bundesliga. His 259 appearances in the German top flight is the highest figure of any foreign ‘keeper apart from Hellström (266).

Since 2008, Benaglio, 33, has made 259 appearances, making 837 saves. Only Oliver Baumann has made more (351) in the BL since the Swiss joined Wolfsburg – where he won the German title in 2009 ahead of Bayern Munich, before lifting the German Cup and Supercup in 2015.

Vadim Vasilyev, Vice-President & CEO of AS Monaco, “We are delighted to welcome Diego Benaglio to AS Monaco. Diego has won several trophies with Wolfsburg, including the Bundesliga, and also played at Euro 2008 and the 2010 and 2014 World Cups with Switzerland. He will bring all of his experience to our squad.”

Diego Benaglio: “It’s an honour to join AS Monaco, the reigning French Champions. I followed the team’s results last year, they achieved great things. Obviously I’ve also followed Falcao’s season and Kylian Mbappé’s development. I can’t wait to meet the squad. I’ll be doing my best to bring my experience and everything I can to the team.”

Diego Benaglio will become the fourth Swiss to play for AS Monaco in the last 40 years, after Umberto Barberis, Marco Grassi and Patrick Müller.
