German Football Ambassadors: Horst Kriete nominated as ‘Coach 2017’!

Football and development have been part of the life of Horst Kriete for more than 35 years and therefore he has been nominated as ‘Coach 2017’ at the German Football Ambassadors awards.

In 1979, Kriete started his international career in Nigeria and was responsible for the training work of the Nigerian Football Association for three years. Since then, the man from Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) has experienced a great deal and has shaped football worldwide. There followed stations in African, Asian and Central American countries. At the same time, the focus was always on the war to promote and sustainably strengthen sporting and social development through football.

On behalf of FIFA and the DFB, he was in charge of training courses for coaches and advised in various positions. From 2004 to 2009, Kriete was active for the Chinese Football Association, restructured the youth and coaches training and contributed significantly to the sporting and cultural exchange between Germany and China.

In South Africa, the former DFB head coach has also been active for more than six years and is still in close contact with former coaches. “My activities for the South African Football Federation (SAFA) have been supported by a great enthusiasm and a strong commitment of the South African Football Association so that I and my family felt at home. The close ties to the South African Football Association have led to a partnership and trusting cooperation.”

As part of the nomination, this was taken as an opportunity to travel to South Africa together with Horst Kriete, Roland Bischof (founder of German Football Ambassadors) and the Deutsche Welle, to gain insights into the nominee’s former impact. “I am very honoured and am pleased with the recognition of my international footballing activities over a period of 39 years.”

Together with representatives from the German Embassy and the South African Football Association, the nomination certificate was handed over in Pretoria and the project” Youth Development through Football “, supported by Kriege was visited.

On March 26, 2017; Deutsche Welle TV broadcasts a special program about the three nominees 2017 of the German Football Ambassadors. In doing so, insights into the commitment and life in the (former) working countries of the coaches are shown. In the category “Coach”, three German coaching personalities have been nominated, who contributed an extraordinary extent to the intercultural exchange and the international reputation of Germany.

Besides Horst Kriete, these are Michael Krüger and Bernd Storck. Krüger is particularly known for his successes in Africa and coached former Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig. Bernd Storck is currently training the Hungarian national team and took them to the European Championship 2016.

The winner in the category »Trainer« will be announced on May 16, 2017 at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
