Germany and England booked their places at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in India after progressing to the semifinals of the 2017 UEFA U-17 European Championship in Croatia. They join Spain and Turkey in qualifying for India 2017, with one remaining European spot still up for grabs.

In the first of Saturday’s two quarterfinals, England defeated Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Velika Gorica, while in the day’s other quarterfinal Germany came from behind to defeat neighbours the Netherlands 2-1 in Zapresic.

Germany and England join Spain and Turkey in qualifying for October’s FIFA U-17 World Cup. In Tuesday’s semifinals at Croatia 2017, Spain will face Germany in Varazdin, while Turkey takes on England in Zapresic.

Welcoming the four teams, Tournament Director of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in India, Javier Ceppi said, “It is very exciting to have four teams qualified from Europe so far, and we are waiting for the last one on the 16th. This brings the confirmed teams to 19, and the quality of all the teams so far promises an unforgettable World Cup. Turkey, Spain, England and Germany will be strong contenders for the title and Indian fans will be delighted to watch them live.”

The fifth and final European spot for India 2017 will be determined via a play-off between the two best-ranked losing quarterfinalists on Tuesday.
