Goa hold Maharashtra to qualify for the Sub-Junior Nationals final round!

Goa played a 1-1 draw in their crucial match against Maharashtra in the Sub-Junior National for Boys (West Zone) organised by the Goa Football Association (GFA), in collaboration with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and played at Duler Stadium in Mapusa on Thursday afternoon.

Arya Kumar scored for Maharashtra while Aditya Salgaokar levelled terms for Goa.

Enjoying a better goal difference, Goa started the match on the front foot and had the first try through Harsh Patre whose well executed free-kick narrowly missed the mark.

At the other end, Maharashtra took control of the game and scored the first goal through Arya Kumar, who scored off a beautiful overhead kick. It didn’t take long for the home teams to level terms as Aditya Salgaokar placed his shot beyond the goalies reach. Joseph D’Souza assisted the goal with a fine through ball.

In an attacking move, Saideep Pomburphekar crossed in a lovely ball to Harsh Patre who’s right footed volley just sailed past the goal post.

Joseph D’Souza and Harsh Patre directed Goa’s midfield with beautiful skills and lovely through balls. At half time the scoreboard read 1-1.

Post resumption Maharashtra played even more attacking football but Goa’s fortress was well defended by Anstein Furtado, Neil Baretto, Marshal Baretto and Versly Paes.

Rohan Viegas tried one from inside the box for Goa but saw his shot miss the goal by few inches.

Maharashtra attacked but just couldn’t get a shot at goal. Goa’s Saideep Pomburphekar placed his shot well but Maharashtra keeper Sunil Mourya did well to keep his name of the scoresheet.

Nihal Dudwadkar tried a shot with his left but saw his shot go miles off the goal. Aniket Kerkar could have had one back for Goa after a lovely through ball played to him by teammate Saideep Pomburphekar but instead the former shot wide. In the dying minutes Kunal Virnodkar played a dangerous cross to Ryan Dias but he couldn’t do much with it.

Goa qualify for the final round to be held in Madhya Pradesh in November.
