Goa Police Cup: Sporting Goa face Churchill Brothers in a dead rubber!

Sporting Goa practiceSporting Clube de Goa will take on Churchill Brothers SC in their second match of Goa Police Cup on Thursday, August 11 at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa. However the fate of Group A has been sealed, as Calangute Association who defeated both the teams has already qualified for the semifinals. A win here for either side would mean finishing second in the group avoiding the bottom spot.

Speaking to the media Sporting Goa Gaffer Mateus Costa said, “We will utilize this match to correct the mistakes we made last time. Our focus is on the upcoming Pro-League and Durand Cup, we cannot afford any slip ups there.”

When asked what went wrong in the first match Costa mentioned, “We lacked discipline at the back, it was a series of silly errors which led to us conceding the first goal, we have studied our mistakes and are confident that we can avoid it next time. We were slow in the first half but played much better football in the second.”

Speaking about the positives Costa said, “Yes we played a lot of positive football, created a lot of chances. We dominated proceedings for a large portion of the match.”

Speaking about Churchill Brothers, Costa said, “Without doubts they are a good team but our boys have practiced hard and we want to correct the things that went wrong in our first match.”

He also added “We are trying a few things this season, the boys have settled in well its just the matter of time you will see the difference for yourself.”

In a slight set back for Sporting Clube de Goa, their defender Ponif Vaz will miss out on Thursdays’ encounter as he is nursing an injury caused in the previous match, rest of the team is fit and available for a pick. Sporting Goa will try and win their last match of the Goa Police Cup to avoid finishing at the bottom of the group. Given the history of how matches between the two have shaped up, fans can expect a thrilling encounter on Thursday afternoon.
