I-League newcomers Sreenidhi FC appoint Fernando Varela as head coach!

I-League newcomers Sreenidhi FC have appointed Spanish-Argentinian Fernando Santiago Varela as their head coach going into the 2021/22 season.

Sreenidhi FC on social media said, “We are pleased to have Argentina – born Spanish football manager Fernando Santiago Varela on board as the Head Coach for the Hero-I League of Sreenidhi Deccan Football Club(SDFC). His technical skills and innovative coaching methods have consistently proven him to be a successful manager. Being a UEFA Pro Licence holder, he surely will drive SDFC to great heights.”

Since first coming to India, Fernando Santiago Varela has had two coaching spells with Gokulam Kerala FC, the first cut short due to personal reasons in the 2018/19 season and Fernando returned to the Malabarians last season (2019/20) and they started off the season by lifting the 2019 Durand Cup in Kolkata but despite a lot of promise, the team did not get close to the 2019/20 I-League title.

Last season, Fernando Varela coached Goans giants Churchill Brothers in the 2020/21 I-League and his team was beaten to the title by Gokulam Kerala FC.

The 47 year old Mar del Plata-born Spaniard of Argentinian origin Fernando Santiago Varela joins Sreenidhi FC, who will be next seasons I-League expansion team.
