ISL-3: Atletico de Kolkata & Chennaiyin FC play out thrilling 2-2 draw!

atletico-de-kolkata-chennaiyin-fcISL-1 champions Atletico de Kolkata needed an 86th minute penalty goal by Iain Hume to gain a two-all draw against defending champions Chennaiyin FC at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in south Kolkata on Sunday evening.

Matches between ATK and Chennaiyin FC have been high voltage encounters since the inception of the ISL two years ago and tonight was no different.

It was goalless after the first 45 minutes despite chances at both ends, but that changed after the break. It was the hosts Atletico de Kolkata who took a 59th minute lead when Helder Postiga found Sameehg Doutie free on the right flank and his placed shoot beat keeper Duwayne Kerr.

But the lead didn’t last too long as Chennaiyin FC equalised in the 66th minute, when Jeje Lalpekhlua found Jayesh Rane free infront of goal and he chips it over keeper Debjit Majumdar. The champions went ahead in the 70th minute when a Hans Mulder long ranger took a headed deflection off ATK defender Tiri and went in past a surprised Debjit.

ATK thereafter pushed for the equaliser, but Postiga and Hume wasted chances before Jerry committed a foul on Doutie and the Mexican referee pointed to the spot. It was left to Iain Hume to score from the spot in the 86th minute with a very placed penalty to earn ATK a deserving point against Chennaiyin FC from the 2-2 draw.
