NorthEast United FC returned to winning ways in the Indian Super League – Season 3 with a lone goal victory over FC Pune City at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Guwahati.
There wasn’t much action in the first session with FC Pune City seeing more of the ball but they lacked the finishing, while at the other end NorthEast United played like a team which had not won in recent weeks. Towards the end of the first session things heated up and three yellow cards were flashed but it remained goalless at the break.
Things did not get much better in the second session as the game lacked pace and an attacking intent from both sides. The teams did have their chances, like NorthEast United on the hour mark as Katsumi Yusa’s attempt and Romaric’s rebound were blocked before Lenny Rodrigues long ranger hit the post.
The match seemed heading for a goalless draw before a Romaric free kick broke the deadlock in the 81st minute to the joy of the NorthEast United bench. Pune City now showed some urgency to at least try and take a point home, but only a Pitu attempt on goal was what they achieved in the final minutes of the game.
In the end NorthEast United FC win their first match after six winless games and now are back in the reckoning for a semifinal spot in ISL-3, while FC Pune City lost a chance to move higher up the rankings.
