Defending ISL champions ATK were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Goa on a historic Wednesday night at the Saltlake Stadium as the kick off had to be delayed a whopping 2 hours and 44 minutes as FC Goa only landed around 9pm in Kolkata and directly came to the stadium for the match.
These extraordinary circumstances led to the match being played so late that it went into Thursday, likely a first in Indian football.
In the match, FC Goa looked tired after their strainuous journey from the west to the east and it was ATK who immediately went into attack. In th 4th minute, a free-kick from Ryan Taylor and captain Robbie Keane rises the highest and nods home for ATK’s lead.
ATK were in-charge but they have to blame themselves for not scoring a second goal and then in the 24th minute, FC Goa equalised in the 24th minute when Manuel Lanzarote found striker Ferran Corominas, who slotted home past Debjit Majumder.
Now the match had its best phase with attacking intent from both teams as FC Goa got better and better, while ATK alos pushed for a second goal. Robbie Keane had a couple of good chances but keeper Laxmikant Kattimani was up to the task, while at the other end Debjit Majumder also denied the Goan attackers. At the break it was 1-1.
The second session started off on a much slower pace with both coaches seeming to have said to focus more on their defence. But there were chances and opportunities at both ends, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw way past midnight on a historic night in Kolkata.
