Hosts Mumbai City FC did not disappoint their home fans as they beat FC Goa in a thrilling encounter 2-1 at the Mumbai Football Arena on Saturday night.
Mumbai City FC were the better of the two sides in the first session with Balwant Singh a constant threat to the Gaurs, but the best Mumbai City FC chance of the half fell to defender Seriton Fernandes, who nearly scored into his own goal while trying to clear the ball. At the break it was goalless.
FC Goa had the better chances going into the second half with the best for Manuel Lanzarote, when he beat keeper Amrinder Singh but his effort only hit the post.
Then came the 59th minute and another blunder from FC Goa keeper and captain Laxmikant Kattimani. Following a back pass, he was closed down by Everton Santos, and the attempt to clear hit Everton’s foot and went into the FC Goa goal. Coach Lebora might have to consider another keeper after Kattimani’s third blunder in only the second match.
But FC Goa’s attacking unit has quality and they now put Mumbai City FC under some pressure and after an offside goal, they got the equaliser in the 83rd minute when Manuel Arana scored off a Ferran Corominas pass.
The momentum was now with FC Goa and the hosts can thank their keeper Amrinder, who brilliantly kept out a Manuel Lanzarote effort in the 86th minute and only two minutes later at the other end, substitute Thiago Nascimento Santos made a darting run on the right flank to beat the Goan defence and keeper to score the winner for Mumbai City FC.
FC Goa did try to equalise in the remaining time, but it wouldn’t change anything as Mumbai City FC got their first win of the campaign.
