Julian Nagelsmann to coach 1899 Hoffenheim one final season, to join RB Leipzig in 2019!

In a surprise move, 1899 Hoffenheim head coach Julian Nagelsmann today announced that he will coach the team for one final season and then switch to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2019.

Nagelsmann leaves Hoffenheim early due a exit clause from his contract that runs until 2021, while he signs a four year contract until 2023 at RB Leipzig.

“It was important for me to work out all the conditions early,” said Nagelsmann, who informed the TSG board of his decision on Wednesday evening. He wanted to be as transparent and honest as possible to avoid any speculation affecting the coming season. “I owe it to everyone who has worked for TSG as well as the fans and players after our historic qualification for the Champions League, not to burden them with speculation and uncertainty about my future. Now everyone knows and we can move on professionally to concentrate on the tasks that matter. Everyone knows that I will go above and beyond for TSG to achieve our ambitious goals until my last minute at the club.”

“Honesty is always respected in the industry. We have proven that and I hope it will be respected,” Nagelsmann added.

“We are sad to hear Julian’s decision, but look forward to a promising upcoming season with a highly motivated team and honest setup at the club,” said TSG managing director Dr. Peter Görlich, who added, “our plans for the future will be announced over the winter.”

“We can now look back at a century in the Bundesliga and have the prospect of the Champions League ahead of us. That is a massive achievement for a club of our size. Julian has played a big part in the story of our success. We know that we have a lot to thank him for and are aware of the chances the club has opened up for him, as well as the confidence we showed in him,” said co-managing director Frank Briel.

“We knew that there was a contractual possibility of his departure, which is not uncommon in professional football,” said Alexander Rosen. “It says a lot about his character that he showed his cards so early and transparently,” the TSG sporting director continued.

RB Leipzig will be getting one of the most talented coaches in world football, but they will have to name an interim coach for the 2018/19 season until Nagelsmann joins them.
