Kuala Lumpur SMC recognised as AFC Medical Centre of Excellence!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) strengthened its commitment to provide world-class healthcare to the Continent’s players and teams by recognising the Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC) and Kelinik Setia as part of the AFC Medical Centre / Clinic of Excellence network today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who presented the award to KLSMC Founder and Director, Dr. Saw Kay Yong and renowned Sports Medicine Consultant, Dato’ Dr. Gurcharan Singh with Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President Dato’ Hamidin Amin also present, lauded the spirit of partnership to set new medical benchmarks.

He said, “The AFC Vision and Mission has made clear our desire to ensure the success of Asian football and sports medicine plays an essential role in delivering those objectives.”

“The AFC continues to take on a leadership role in best medical practices and through the ever-growing network of the AFC Medical Centres of Excellence, we are committed to expanding the scope and access for players to obtain world-class medical attention and treatment.”

“It also paves the way to enhance the capabilities of medical practitioners through greater partnerships, sharing of scientific knowledge and capacity building.”

“On behalf of the Asian football family, I would like to commend KLSMC and host association FAM, for sharing the AFC’s Vision to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of our players and their dedication in elevating the standards of football and sports medicine in Asia.”

The AFC Medical Centre of Excellence was launched in 2017, with the aim to reward and recognise medical centres in Asia which demonstrate leadership in clinical, research and education expertise, injury-prevention measures as well as experience in managing injuries in top-level football.

“KLSMC and our collaborative sports medicine clinic – Kelinik Setia, Jalan Gombak, Kuala Lumpur are extremely honoured to be accredited as the first AFC Medical Centre of Excellence. As one of the leading medical centres in Malaysia, we are driven to observe and deploy the highest medical and healthcare standards and this international recognition is a testament to our position as leaders in sports medicine, not only in the region but also in the Continent,” said Dr. Saw.

“We are very proud to be able to put Malaysia on the international map of providers of distinctive high quality “state of the art” treatment for sports related injuries and care of athletes.”

KLSMC’s glowing endorsement is a significant boost to the ASEAN Zone, following the footsteps of Thailand’s Bangkok Hospital, the Centre for Sports Science (CSS) as well as Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) which were recognised by the AFC Medical Committee at its last meeting in September.
