Legendary India & Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shibaji Banerjee passes away!

Former India international and Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shibaji Banerjee passed away in Kolkata this Sunday evening after suffering a cardiac arrest after he had attended a programme in Alipore.

Shibaji Banerjee was 68 and is survived by his wife and son.

His most famous match in his beloved Mohun Bagan colours was against New York Cosmos on their visit to Kolkata in 1977, where Shibaji Banerjee made a famous save against the legendary Pele, which generations of Maidan football lovers spoke and still speak about.

Besides a stellar club career, Shibaji Banerjee represented India between 1972 and 1981 across qualifiers, tournaments and friendlies, and he was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.

Since 2015, Shibaji Banerjee had been a Technical Committee member of Mohun Bagan until his death, was a regular of Mohun Bagan home games and had attended yesterday’s I-League match against DSK Shivajians FC at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium, which his club had won and he is said to have been very happy about.

My heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and everyone else, who knew and respected Shibajida!!!

I will miss our interactions on Indian and international football.

May your soul rest in peace…
