Former I-League champions Minerva Punjab FC will play their two remaining 2019 AFC Cup group stage home matches at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Guwahati.
The original plan for Minerva Punjab FC was to play all their three group stage home matches at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha but after the announcement of India set to host the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and the Kalinga Stadium a potential venue, the Odisha government decided to as quickly as possible to upgrade the stadium, which would have been directly after the end of the Super Cup, but in May and June the Stadium was set to host the Minerva Punjab FC’s continental matches.
That clearance was pulled by the Odisha government but after requests from Minerva Punjab FC, the first home match on May 1 against Manang Marshyangdi Club of Nepal was played at the Kalinga Stadium, but Minerva Punjab FC needed an alternative for the two remaining home matches.
Now Minerva Punjab FC have found an alternative in the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati after having looked at numerous venues across India. Guwahati last year had hosted the Aizawl FC home matches in the AFC Cup and therefore the AFC only had to clear the new home venue as the stadium had been okayed by the AFC.
Now Minerva Punjab FC will host Chennaiyin FC on June 19 and then Abahani Limited Dhaka of Dhaka on June 26 in Guwahati with an aim to try to qualify for the 2019 AFC Cup knockout stage.
