Mohammedan Sporting hold Southern Samity to CFL draw!

Kalu Ogba’s 17th minute goal was cancelled out by Arthur Kouassi’s injury time strike as Southern Samity were held to a 1-1 draw by Mohammedan Sporting Club in their 2019/20 Calcutta Football League – Premier Division ‘A’ encounter on Monday.

On the balance of play, Mohammedan Sporting will feel they should have sneaked it as they dominated proceedings and created better goal-scoring chances.

They will surely be kicking themselves for not burying numerous goal-scoring opportunities they created, especially in the later stages of the encounter.

But in the end, the result was perhaps a fair reflection of the action on show. Both teams had periods of dominance and numerous scoring opportunities.

Mohammedan Sporting had a few promising moments early on, but were kept in check by Southern Samity’s defence of Samuel Kane and Govin Singh. It was at the other end, however, where the opening goal arrived and it was old warhorse Kalu, who headed home a cross from Faisal Ali to give Southern Samity the lead in the 17th minute.

Possession-wise Southern Samity seemed to have the upper hand and certainly in terms of shots on goals Mehtab Hossain’s charges were keeping their opponent’s goalkeeper Priyant Singh much busier than their own custodian Ishan Debnath was.

That’s not to say Mohammedan Sporting didn’t have their chances. There were several occasions when they broke past the backline and threatened 1v1 with Ishan, however were either snapped for offside or failed to be as lethal as they needed to be in front of goal as a result Southern Samity retained the advantage going into the break.

Mohammedan Sporting came out of the sheds fired up to bring themselves back into contention, controlling the ball, winning set pieces and keeping Southern Samity pinned into their own back third.

The Black Panthers were all over Southern Samity and asking more and more questions. Ishan produced a glorious save to keep Mohammedan Sporting at bay when he denied substitute Amir Hossain in a one-on-one inside the box, diving full length to stop the ball from going in.

Southern Samity weren’t without chances of their own, but between some solid defending and the safe hands of Priyant, the attackers were unable to get an edge on their opponent.

Mohammedan Sporting continued to have the majority of possession and chances in front of goal with Kouassi combining well with Vanlalbiaa Chhangte to create opportunities they were often unlucky not to score from.

As the clock counted down Mohammedan Sporting continued to put pressure on Southern Samity and the pressure eventually told as Kouassi scored the all-important goal in stoppage time when he cut in from the right before firing into the bottom corner.

Having scored, Mohammedan Sporting showed more endeavour in attack and it took everything Rainbow AC had left in their tank to deny the late onslaught from The Black Panthers. Ishan also made a number of telling saves to salvage a point for his side.

It was cruel on Mohammedan Sporting, who did not enjoy as much of the ball as their opponents but – led by commanding performances from Priyant and the centre back pairing of Kareem Omolaja and Arijit Singh – defended resolutely and could well have taken all three points with more fortune in front of goal.
