Mohun Bagan announce signing of Trinidad & Tobago defender Daneil Cyrus!

Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan today announced the signing of defender Daneil Cyrus. 28 year old Cyrus is a central defender who can also operate as a right back. Standing 6 feet and 3.5 inches tall Cyrus is a regular for Trinidad and Tobago national team and has played club football in his native Trinidad and Tobago, USA, Vietnam, Honduras and Saudi Arabia.

Deniel Cyrus was born on December 15, 1990 in Plymouth, Trinidad and Tobago. He started his youth career in 2008 with Stokely Vale. He then joined FC Santa Rosa and spent two seasons there, undergoing loan stints at Caledonia AIA and Major League Soccer side Kansas City FC. He then joined W Connection FC in the TT Pro League. 2013 was a very successful year for Cyrus in club level as he won the TT Pro League title, TT FA Cup as well as TT Charity Shield.

In 2014 Cyrus made his first venture into Asian football and played for Hanoi T&T Club in the Vietnamese V League 1. This was followed by a loan move of few months to MLS club Chicago Fire. From February 2016 to May 2017 Cyrus yet again represented W Connection FC. He spent the next season in Honduras, playing 29 times for Juticalpa FC in Honduran top division Liga Nacional de Ascenso. Last season he sported the jersey of Al-Orobah FC in Saudi Arabia’s second division.

During his extensive club career Daneil Cyrus has also made appearances in both AFC Champions League and CONCACAF Champions League.

Cyrus is highly successful in his international career and is a regular choice for T&T national team since making his debut in 2010. He has played 83 times for the Soca Warriors and represented his country in major tournaments like the CONCACAF Gold Cup as well as Carribean Cup. Cyrus was part of the T&T squads that finished runners up in both 2012 and 2014 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup. In 2014 Caribbean Cup Cyrus was one of the standout performers and was selected in team of the tournament. His first CONCACAF Gold Cup came in 2013 when he played in every match as a starter or a substitute, helping T&T reach the quarterfinals where they were knocked out by Mexico. He played two matches in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup when Soca Warriors again reached the quarterfinal. In last edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019, Cyrus started in all three matches for his country and even captained them in the last group match – a 1-1 draw with Guyana. In 2017 he played 90 minutes in a FIFA World Cup qualifier match when T&T famously defeated USA with a 2-1 scoreline. His most recent match for T&T came last week as he helped his team carve out a 2-0 victory over the UAE.

Daneil Cyrus is not the first player from Trinidad and Tobago to play for Mohun Bagan. He will be following the footsteps of former FIFA World Cupper and I-League top scorer Cornell Glen, who played for the Mariners in the 2015/16 season.
