Mohun Bagan beat Minerva Punjab FC in their U-19 IFA Shield opener!

Minerva Punjab FC Colts went down narrowly to Mohun Bagan AC in the ongoing U-19 IFA Shield at the Mohun Bagan ground in Kolkata today.

The match started off with high intensity from both teams to get the opening goal. In the 5th minute, a Mohun Bagan forward made his way into the box and fired a shot from close range which was thwarted off by a great save from Minerva’s alert custodian Shamsher Singh. Soon after in the 9th Minute, Minerva’s P.K. Mung combined beautifully with captain Krishna Pandit whose shot missed the post by inches. Players of both teams had to face the searing heat and humidity with the game turning scrappy with both teams trying to disrupt each other’s play. In the 28th minute Minerva Punjab FC again came close to scoring as Vinod’s beautiful cross landed perfectly for P.K. Mung who failed to score from the free header. In the 35th minute Mohun Bagan struck with a counter attack making the scoreline 1-0 in favour of the home team through L. Lotha. The teams went into half time with Mohun Bagan leading 1-0.

The second half saw more intent from the Minerva Punjab FC colts who tried to string together attack after attack but they just could not get the ball into the goal. The Mohun Bagan colts were happy to sit back and defend their lead, waiting to strike with a counter at the opportune moment. In the 50th minute Krishna Pandit again came close to scoring when he ran past two Mohun Bagan defenders but again lacked the finishing touch. As the game progressed there were lot of stoppages as Mohun Bagan boys tried to run down the clock. Six minutes of extra time were given in lieu of the stoppages but Minerva Punjab FC could not make a come back despite moments of brilliance.
