Mohun Bagan walk off CFL match, fan violence follows, may boycott remainder of league!

Calcutta Football LeagueControversy struck the Calcutta Football League tonight during the Mohun Bagan AC and Tollygunge Agragami encounter of the Premier Division – A at the Mohun Bagan ground on the Kolkata Maidans.

According to Mohun Bagan bad refereeing by head referee Dipu Das and his assistants led to three genuine goals disallowed with the Mariners management later on saying that this was being done to harm them and give archrivals East Bengal without naming them, the chance to win a record seventh CFL title in a row.

The third and final offside was called in the second minute of added time, when Azharuddin Mallick’s goal was disallowed, which would have been Mohun Bagan’s late 2-1 winner. Once the offside call stood, Mohun Bagan officials and fans entered the field of play charging at the match officials besides the fans throwing everything possible at them as well as on the Tollygunge Agragami bench and players.

The match commissioner Udayan Halder sensing that things could not be brought under control through the police force present and the Mohun Bagan officials after sometime abandoned the match.

Meanwhile the Mohun Bagan officials pulled their team off the field with two minutes to play in added time and thereafter their president Swapan Sadhan Bose said, “We don’t want to play the match any more. We are withdrawing the team in protest of this one-sided refereeing.”

A letter was send to the Indian Football Association (West Bengal) as the parent body of the CFL with a request for a replay of the match against Tollygunge Agragami, if not Mohun Bagan would boycott the remainder of the 2016 CFL’s Premier Division – A.

The IFA is now in the difficult situation of having to mediate on one side in their own interest with the Kolkata derby set for September 7, look at the issue of refereeing, but also punish Mohun Bagan for the unacceptable behaviour of their fans in invading the ground and threatening the officials and their opponents.
