Aizawl FC earned a crucial victory just over 24 hours after their I-League clash with NEROCA FC as they sealed a 2-0 victory over Electric Veng FC.
The two time MPL champions saw some retribution as they reversed their round 1 result where they succumbed to the same opponents with the same score.
This was the third time the two teams have met this season with Electric Veng FC getting the better of their more seasoned opponents in the first two occasions.
Electric Veng FC had the better exchanges right after kickoff but it was Aizawl FC who threatened first when Rochharzela struck the bar early on.
Electric Veng FC responded with Vanlalremsanga drawing a save from Aizawl FC goalkeeper Awmpuia while David Lalchhuanawma was also of some wayward finishing.
Aizawl FC struck a few minutes after the restart when K. Lalhmangaihkima netted a beauty from outside the box to give his side the lead.
Substitute Jonathan Lalrawngbawla almost doubled their lead moments later only for Electric Veng custodian Nunga Hnamte to thwart him in a one-on-one.
The I-League club continued to control possession and tempo of the game as they looked to see out their lead. Electric Veng FC did have whiffs of the goal through Vanlalremsanga and R. Lalthanmawia but they failed to provide the necessary touches to pose real threats on goal.
And the game was soon put out of their touch when some individual brilliance from F. Lalremsanga unlocked Electric Veng FC’s defence to score and kill off the game for Aizawl FC.
