New CFL champions Mohun Bagan beat Mohammedan Sporting in final game!

New Calcutta Football League – Premier Division ‘A’ champions Mohun Bagan scored a 2-1 win over Mohammedan Sporting Club at the Saltlake Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Philip Adjah Tetteh gave Mohammedan Sporting the lead in the 73rd minute but Mohun Bagan struck twice in the final minutes of the game through Tirthankar Sarkar (82′) and Pintu Mahata (90′) to seal the points.

Going into the match Mohammedan Sporting technical director Raghu Nandi made four changes to the side by handing starts to Priyant Singh, Lancine Toure, Rakesh Karmakar and Princewill Emeka.

Mohun Bagan dominated for much of the first 45 minutes, with Aser Dipanda Dicka, as well as Azharuddin Mallick and Pintu Mahata at the heart of their attacking forays.

Whereas, Mohammedan Sporting gave up possession on numerous occasions which allowed Mohun Bagan to put them under pressure. However, Mariners failed to convert the chances they created.

In the 14th minute Azharuddin played a great ball into the penalty area to find a late run from Dipanda, but the Cameroonian failed to keep his effort on target, much to Priyant’s relief.

The Mariners were on the attack again a few minutes later as Pintu swung in a flag-kick. Dipanda headed it on and Priyant was in position to steer a header just wide.

Mohammedan Sporting, on the other hand, looked to catch Mohun Bagan on the counter-attack, but poor finishing proved to be their downfall as they wasted a number of good opportunities to break the deadlock. The chances dried up towards the end of the half and the sides went into the dressing rooms with scores tied at goalless.

The second-half saw Mohammedan Sporting on the ascendancy from the very beginning, and unlike the first-half where they sat back and allowed Mohun Bagan to play, the Black Panthers opted for a more aggressive attacking game which made them more dangerous.

However, the Mohun Bagan defence managed to hold on and clear all the attacks in the opening quarter.

Nonetheless, Mohammedan Sporting’s constant pressure finally paid off as they took the lead in the 73rd minute through substitute Adjah. The Ghanaian scored a brilliant right footed goal from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

The goal gave Mohammedan Sporting a morale boost as they began pushing up in numbers. A few good chances fell for Adjah and Dipendu Dowary but they lacked the killer punch inside the box.

At the other end, Mohun Bagan pulled level eight minutes before the final whistle when Tirthankar slotted a free-kick home to make it 1-1.

Thereafter, both sides engaged in some end-to-end stuff in the final minutes before Mohun Bagan sealed a 2-1 win in the 90th minute when Pintu scored from Dipanda’s pass.

The result saw Mohammedan Sporting remain in fourth spot with 16 points from 10 outings and will play their last match against Calcutta Customs on September 22 at the Barasat Stadium.
