Podcast – 420Grams Special: The Turning Point for Sunil Chhetri!

This is a podcast on Indian football under the curious name of 420grams featuring the host Arjun Pandit with a special on India captain Sunil Chhetri on his 33th birthday this week.

For those of us who spent our formative years wallowing in the mire of Delhi football, local heroes were few. For decades, despite the efforts of a small group of enthusiasts, football in the capital floundered, struggled and has teetered on the brink of extinction. As is the case in all swamps, some manage to free themselves of the shackles and break out. Long before there was Sunil Chhetri, there was Rishi Kapur—a strong, intelligent full back who grew up in Delhi but managed to move on to represent the biggest clubs in Indian football. Today, just after Chhetri’s 32nd birthday, Kapur talks to us about his relationship with the current India captain and recounts the early days of Chhetri’s career. The year was 2002 and Chhetri had singed his first pro contract with Mohun Bagan, where he joined up with his senior from Delhi. In this very personal account of the first phase of Chhetri’s career Kapur not only recounts their time together, but also talks about Chhetri the person and what he believes are the traits that have made him among the best players India has ever seen.

The people behind the 420grams podcast say: Contrary to what the majority of you is thinking, this is not a podcast about marijuana. Although it could be, from time to time. This is your regular dose of the inside goings-on in Indian football presented by three men in a tub, with a deep personal investment in the sport and the country. 420grams wants to be an honest and engaging conversation space.
