UMBRO and Sapeur – One Step Beyond have joined forces to revive the spirit of 1990 with the launch of two archive-inspired pieces.
The football shirt is inspired by the jersey Gazza and the boys wore at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. We gave this iconic jersey a twist and added a bit of German pub culture paying homage to the Ebbelwoi, a national sanctuary and beverage of choice for any inhabitant of the Sapeur-homebase, the state of Hessen. While the classic button collar is a nod to the original shirt, the Sapeur crest on the chest is framed by the infamous Fichtekranz, a spruce wreath that symbolizes the local “Ebbelwoi culture” seen on every traditional Apfelwein pub in the Frankfurt area.
The quarterzip sweater is paying homage to the spirit of the terraces and the sounds of the scene: zipped up to the top and worn with jeans and trainers, this was the perfect attire for the smart dressed chap while listening to the songs of the 1990s that are still mandatory today on many soundtracks for the next away day. Details feature the tonal logo embroidery on the chest and the Sapeur (OSB) tip-to-the-hat to Madness (the band…oh well, and the state of mind, if you like) – “One Step Beyond” – stitched on the neck.
