Sporting Clube de Goa blank Sesa Football Academy at AWES Cup!

Sporting Clube de Goa coasted to a comfortable 2-0 victory against Sesa Football Academy in their opening group clash of the AWES Cup, organised by Association for the Wellbeing of Elder Sportspersons (AWES) in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Thursday.

Sporting Clube de Goa got both the goals in the first session as Victorino Fernandes and Mauvin Borges scored in the 14th and 33rd minute respectively. The win gives Sporting Clube de Goa three points and a good platform to launch their campaign for a semifinal berth from a group that also consists Gokulam Kerala FC and ONGC.

Sporting Clube de Goa were always favoured to win this tie comfortably and they started well, pinning Sesa Football Academy in their own half.

Sporting Club de Goa were helped by an early goal in the 14th minute. Girish Naik worked his way down the right flank and essayed a ball inside the goalmouth where Victorino was on hand to turn it home.

The Goa Pro League champions made it 2-0 just after the half an hour mark, this time Mauvin Borges adding his name to the scoresheet. It was a simple cross from Ganesh Thakur which the Sesa Football Academy defence couldn’t clear properly and Mauvin pounced on the opportunity to hammer the ball past the Sesa Football Academy goalkeeper.

Just before half-time, Sesa Football Academy had a great chance to pull a goal back but a cross from Javad P. saw Sesa Football Academy players slow to react inside the box.

In the second session, Sporting Clube de Goa had chances to enhance their goal tally but captain Victorino was guilty of missing two good chances.

Sesa Football Academy too had a chance in the 77th minute when midfielders Mark Barreto and Ashley Cardozo combined well and found Joston Pereira but his attempt lacked power.

Tomorrow’s Fixture: FC Goa vs Salgaocar FC – Tilak Maidan, Vasco at 4pm
