Superpower Football: Goian thinks Chennaiyin FC deserved the AFC Cup spot!

Chennaiyin FC captain Lucian Goian reveals how he felt when the AIFF announced that Bengaluru FC, the team that lost in the ISL semifinals, would get the AFC Cup play off spot, instead of his own team who were runners-up of the recently concluded ISL season!

Following the merger of Kolkata giants, ATK and Mohun Bagan, it was deeply debated on who should get the two remaining AFC slots after FC Goa sealed their AFC Champions League berth. Having no official confirmation from the AIFF, many assumed that Chennaiyin FC, who placed second in the top division league would get one of the Asian slots. However, it came as a shock to Indian Football fans when the AFC Cup group stage was given to the newly merged ATK-Mohun Bagan outfit and when the elusive AFC Cup play off spot was given to Bengaluru FC who came third in the group stages of the league.

Lucian Goian felt that the rules should have been communicated by the federation in advance which would have helped avoid this confusion. He affirmed that, announcing the rules for AFC slots in advance helps the players and the teams know what they are fighting for, from the get-go.
