Toronto FC has become the first Canadian team in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS) to win the MLS Cup, capping off an incredible playoff run and exciting performance at BMO Field on Saturday, December 9.
After reaching the MLS Cup Final for the second consecutive year, TFC can now call themselves MLS Cup champions. TFC beat defending champions Seattle Sounders FC 2-0 during an epic rematch from 2016 in front of a sold-out crowd of over 30,000.
The win marks both the first MLS Cup win for the club and the first MLS Cup won by a Canadian franchise of the league.
“We are so excited for the Toronto FC on their incredible victory tonight,” said Darryl White, Chief Executive Officer, BMO Financial Group. “BMO is proud to count itself as a long-time sponsor and supporter of the club. We’ve been here since the very beginning!”
Back in 2015, BMO renewed a deal to keep its name on BMO Field and remain an official partner of the Toronto FC for another ten years.
“Toronto FC is happy to celebrate this milestone moment alongside BMO Financial Group,” said Toronto FC president Bill Manning. “From the club’s inaugural year, BMO has been an incredible partner and advocate for Canadian soccer and their support has been imperative to this championship.”
