U-16 Youth League: Mohammedan Sporting suffer loss to Shillong Lajong FC in opener!

Mohammedan Sporting Club Under-16 boys started their campaign in the 2017 Nike Premier Cup (U-16 Youth League – Final Round) with a 0-1 defeat to Shillong Lajong FC Under-16 boys at the Cooperage Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The Highlanders won via a second-half goal that was scored by Donboklang Lyngdoh.

Mohammedan Sporting looked solid at the start, working their way neatly forward. Surajuddin Munshi was the first to go close when his effort narrowly missing the target in the 8th minute.

Mohammed Giasuddin was also presented with a chance in the 16th minute only to be blocked by the rival keeper Lallawmkima. Skipper Debraj Rakshit then missed a chance when he headed wide off a corner.

Mohammedan Sporting kept on pushing forward and had a few more chances but it was the lack of finishing that let them down as the first-half ended goalless.

The second-half was a similar story to the first as Mohammedan Sporting continued to dominate proceedings. However their attackers ran out of ideas on entering the penetrative zone of Lajong FC.

While Mohammedan Sporting pressed high up, Lajong FC managed to take the lead against the run of the play at the other end when Lyngdoh slotted home from Baiakara Swer’s pass in the 60th minute.

Mohammedan Sporting in the remaining half hour had numerous chances to equalise, but Lajong FC managed to hold on to their slender lead with some solid defending as the game ended 0-1.

Mohammedan Sporting now face Aizawl FC in a must win game on Thursday, February 2 at the same venue in Mumbai.
