mohun-bagan-u16-mohammedan-sporting-u16A wasteful Mohammedan Sporting Club Under-16 boys went down 0-1 to Mohun Bagan AC U-16s in an eighth round Kolkata Zone fixture of the U-16 Youth League on Friday at the Mohun Bagan ground.

In a evenly contested match, Samar Kumir’s long range effort in the 53rd minute did not only separated both teams but also ensured Mohun Bagan a final round berth.

It was Mohun Bagan who began the game aggressively and pushed up from the very beginning. Deep Saha was the first to go close when his effort narrowly missed the target in the 11th minute.

After soaking some early pressure, Mohammedan Sporting began making inroads into the rival defence and they had chances through Surajuddin Munshi, Sovan Sen and Debraj Rakshit but it was the lack of finishing that let them down as the first half ended goalless.

The second half was a similar story to the first as Mohammedan Sporting continued to dominate proceedings but their attackers ran out of ideas on entering the penetrative zone of Mohun Bagan.

While Mohammedan Sporting pressed high up, Mohun Bagan managed to take the lead against the run of the play at the other end when Samar slotted home a long range screamer from 30 yards out.

Mohammedan Sporting thereafter had numerous chances to equalise, but Mohun Bagan managed to hold on with some solid defending as the game ended 1-0 in favour of the Mariners.

Following this defeat Mohammedan Sporting remain on 12 points and will face East Bengal next on December 4 at the Barasat Municipal Stadium.
