U-19 IFA Shield: East Bengal defeat archrivals Mohun Bagan on penalties!

The final of the 122nd U-19 IFA Shield saw East Bengal Club overcome archrivals Mohun Bagan AC 4-2 on penalties at the Barasat Municipal Stadium to lift their 29th overall title.

On a hot and humid afternoon in Kolkata, the referee ordered drink breaks after every 15 minutes to ensure the health and safety of the young footballers.

After a goalless first half, Mohun Bagan went ahead in the 47th minute through a Sourav Das effort from inside the box, but East Bengal equalised in the 84th minute through Dip Saha’s long range effort which was let in by the Mohun Bagan keeper Asanja Daimary.

In the end it came down to penalties in which Jhantu Prasad, Lalcchanhima, P.C. Rohlupuia and Dip Saha scored for the red and gold, while Subhanil Ghosh’s shot was saved; while for the Mariners the first penalty went wide and then the second was saved and they could not catch up as East Bengal won 4-2 on penalties.

For the red and gold it was their 29th overall IFA Shield title, the first for their Under-19 boys.
