The German Football Association (DFB) will get a new mobility partner with the Volkswagen AG from 2019 onwards. At the end of an open, transparent and non-discriminatory bidding process, the DFB board unanimously voted for cooperation with the Wolfsburg-based car manufacturer on the basis of the present bids at its meeting in Frankfurt/Main. The contract with VW will begin on January 1, 2019 and has a term until July 31, 2024. The package also covers Volkswagen’s existing commitment to the German DFB Cup for this period. The DFB’s partnership with current partners Mercedes-Benz will end on December 31, 2018.

For the first time, the mobility partnership was awarded by the DFB within the framework of a formal tender. All interested parties were invited to participate in the tender. With Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, two companies subsequently made use of the opportunity to present their ideas and concepts for a partnership before the DFB board and submit their bids in two bidding sessions. The decision was made on the basis of a detailed economic and content analysis of the bids submitted within the deadline. The final decision after the okay from the DFB board.

DFB president Reinhard Grindel said, “We are very pleased to have Volkswagen as a mobility partner at our side from 2019. It is a good fit for the DFB that VW’s commitment to the entire football from the top to the bottom, most recently in the many regional and local partnerships of the VW dealerships with amateur clubs, and at the same time, Volkswagen is a strong partner in the international market, particularly in China, with a significant increase in revenues through the new contract with more scope to fulfill the diverse tasks of the association and to implement the non-profit purposes even more sustainably.” And further, “Even if the events are not comparable, the DFB and the VW unite the need to learn from the mistakes of the past and to derive the right measures for the future.”

Grindel also stated, “We are grateful to Mercedes-Benz for the time together and will continue our successful Partnership to the end of 2018 with the same passion as in the past years.”

DFB Secretary General Dr. Friedrich Curtius said, “At all times, there were very open and respectful talks with all parties involved, both companies have applied for the partnership with good offers and impressive presentations. We greatly appreciate this interest in working with the DFB and I would like to thank all the bidders for the fair competition, and we will do our utmost to ensure the successful cooperation with Mercedes-Benz until the end.”

Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, said, “The partnership with the German Football Association is great for us, because Volkswagen and the number 1 sport is a good partnership, with the German national teams showing courage. We want to be partners of the national teams, we want to be on the side of all German football with its 25,000 clubs and seven million members.”
