Australia needing a win to potentially stay in contention for a knockout spot started off the better of the two sides but Peru went ahead in the 18th minute as Andre Carrillo scored off Guerrero, but the former Bundesliga striker was offside when he received the ball before he played on.
But Australia thereafter had more of the ball but few chances to equalise in the first half as Peru went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
After the break Pablo Guerrero doubled Peru’s lead in the 50th minute, which would seal the win as it was a day in which Australia just couldn’t score.
For Peru it was a historic day as the country scored a FIFA World Cup for the first-time in 40 years, since 1978.
